About Yana

Hey, I’m Yana, a lead product designer, an architecture photographer, and a new media artist. As long as I remember, I always wanted to be a designer: of clothes, buildings, graphics, and experiences. This led me to get a degree in architecture. And to build a career in the field that has resonated with me the most — product design. For me, design is a problem-solving activity where data, psychology, ergonomics, empathy, and understanding human behavior are your best friends. I’m keen on visual aesthetics and get a kick out of making customer experiences easier.

Evolution

I started to work as a product designer 9 years ago in a B2B company that develops medical applications for hospitals and insurance companies. Working in that domain required strong UX skills and implied lots of information architecture-related work, as there’s tons of data in medicine and all of it is essential. After having worked there for 4 years, I gradually came to realize that I wanted to work with end-users and get my UI expertise on par with my UX skills. That’s when I changed the job and started to work at an over-the-top video streaming platform. This change from medicine to entertainment has made it clear to me how important the visual side of the design is. When people open a video on demand application they expect to relax and start having fun from the very first second. During the last year, I have been heavily involved in kids UX: I have launched the kids section of the platform and the corresponding multiple user profile functionality.

Team player

I am self-motivated and able to motivate others, with solid communication and interpersonal skills. Team playing is my thing and I acknowledge how important it is to constantly improve the functioning of a team. I do that by optimizing the processes, nurturing a healthy and open climate, and keeping track of the team’s mood together with the head of the product design department, whom I occasionally substitute. Every few months I organize meetups with guest speakers for our design team to spark inspiration and encourage skills development. I have conducted over 80 designer job interviews, hired 5 designers, and raised 1 senior designer.

Hobbies

I like giving back to the design community. My icons have been downloaded from the Noun Project over 20k times.

As a trained architect, I adore architecture and capturing it in photography. My architecture photos have been downloaded from Unsplash more than 50k times. Another beloved practice of mine is creating art projects that reflect on the topics of human existence, its roots and its future.
